Dame Paula Rego RA was one of the most important figurative artists of her generation. Her work explores themes of power, rebellion, sexuality and gender, grief and poverty, often through female protagonists. She is particularly known for her paintings and prints based on storybooks.
‘Some subject matter is universal. Folk tales that have been around for hundreds of years, or religious stories, resonate collectively’ (Exhibition catalogue, Paula Rego: An Enduring Journey A Life in Print, London, Cristea Roberts Gallery, 2021, p. 30).
