Robert Polhill Bevan was born in Brunswick Square, Hove, near Brighton. Until the end of his life Bevan continued to paint in the Bolham valley and Luppitt. He also depicted a number of London street scenes, largely focused on the area around St John’s Wood and Belsize Park.

The public house depicted in this work on paper has recently been identified as ‘British Flag’, 7 Newcourt Road, which has now closed.
