RACHEL HOWARD (b. 1969)
You Can Save Me 2015
oil on canvas
76.2 x 91.4 cm
You Can Save Me was painted by Howard in response to being invited to exhibit at the Jerwood Gallery in 2015.
The division of space in the work suggests a shifting seascape and Howard took inspiration for the work and its title from a sign seen on the dilapidated Hastings Pier before it was resurrected. She commented: 'I grew up on a farm near the sea on the North East coast of England, and having a permanent horizon every day to look at gives a wonderful reassurance in what can be at times a very uncertain world. My show at Jerwood Gallery explored both these aspects of certainty and uncertainty.'
