Study for Blue Towel, 1982

Pencil on paper
25.2 x 38.5 cm

This work corresponds to The Blue Towel, 1982, also in Jerwood Collection. The artist Liz Barratt posed for the drawings tracing her movements when she stayed the night at the artists’ studio. The drawing offers invaluable insight into Uglow’s working process and the evolutions of his works on canvas.

Speaking to his students in 1993, Uglow explained: ‘This is someone picking up a towel and having a shower. It was the same girl all the way through… I did a whole lot of drawings… I never had the picture downstairs when I was painting.’
