Widely acclaimed as a central figure of the Bloomsbury Group, the modernist painter, Vanessa Bell (1879-1961) was a pivotal player in 20th century British art, inventing a new language of visual expression.

In 1955, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant drove through France and onwards to Asolo, a mountainous village in norther Italy, where the present work was painted. Bell found the historic town a breath of fresh air. In a letter to her daughter, Angelica Garnett she commented ‘Of course the light is so amazing, everything is colour and definite and exciting.’
