DAME BARBARA HEPWORTH (1903-1975)
Study for Lisa (Hands to Face) 1949
pencil and oil on board
45.7 x 25.4 cm
Study for Lisa (Hands to Face) was executed in 1949, the year that Hepworth bought Trewyn Studios (now the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden) in St Ives, where she lived permanently from December 1950 until her death. The model is a local Cornish girl, Lisa, who sat for several other related drawings.
Hepworth’s technique of drawing over a painted base which had been scraped or rubbed down in places was also shared by her husband, Ben Nicholson. The resulting work gives the impression of spatial depth while conveying the composition through a precise line drawing. Although Study for Lisa (Hands to Face) is a figurative work it relates closely to Hepworth’s sculptures and abstract drawings through the sense of rhythm and curved shapes described by the pencil line.
